New Rules For Drones Operators

News & Events

11/11/2020

By the end of December 2020, all owners of drones have to register their drones with Transport Malta and will be provided with a certificate of use.

These new rules will ensure conformity with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency – Unmanned Aircraft Systems ( EASA UAS ) regulations. These regulations, which will come into force on the 31st of December 2020, classify Unmanned Aircraft Systems ( UAS ) into three risk based categories which are: Open, Specific and Certified.

The regulations require the registration of UAS operators and the licencing of remote pilots. Each member state has to also identify geographical zones restricted for UAS operations and carry out market surveillance of drones. Operators are now also obliged to be covered by a valid third-party liability insurance policy.

Until the end of December the registration of drones will be free of charge and the certificate will be renewable on an annual basis, against a fee.
